Tips For A Healthy Relationship

Relationships…they are so complicated!

Even the best relationship will have struggles, but if we are prepared for the battles then we have a better chance of a healthy outcome.

Here are a few tips to keep in mind...

Put God into the center of your relationship.

“But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” Matthew 6:33

Check your expectations; they can set you up for disappointment.

“This is what the LORD says: ‘Cursed are those who put their trust in mere humans and turn their hearts away from the LORD’.” Jeremiah 17:5

Your partner cannot fix your heart. Only God can.

“He heals the brokenhearted, binding up their wounds.” Psalm 147:3

A healthy relationship is about the Kingdom of God, not the Kingdom of Self.

“Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves.” Philippians 2:3

Honor, love and cherish your partner. Each should submit to the other. Our motivation to do so is our love for Christ!

“Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ.” Ephesians 5:21

Understand that your only perfect partner is Jesus Christ. Your human partner will never be perfect.

“For God made Christ, who never sinned, to be the offering for our sin, so that we could be made right with God through Christ.” 2 Corinthians 5:21

Offer grace and forgiveness. This protects our heart more and keeps us humble.

“My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry,” James 1:19

Our trials are meant to grow us and bring us closer to our Creator. Look through the storm and focus on the “big picture” that God is working out.

“Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.” James 1:2-4

Resting in Christ’s love and power brings clarity and security.

“The fear of the Lord leads to life;
then one rests content, untouched by trouble.” Proverbs 19:23

God commands us to love one another. Allowing ourselves to receive God’s love is the key to fulfilling this command!

"My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you.” John 15:12

One more (just for good measure):

Treat others (including your spouse) with the attitude that you would want to be treated. You reap what you sow!

“And the seed whose fruit is righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace.” James 3:18

Remember, God’s ways are the BEST ways, even when our flesh cries out to do the opposite.

Cling to Him, depend on His strength to follow through…He promises you will be blessed!

But He said, “Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and keep it!” Luke 11:28
