When my daughters were 10 and 6, we had a situation come up that required a last minute trip to Texas. We announced to the girls at 5:00 p.m. that we were flying to Texas the next day! Our 10 year old said, “No, we are not, I need more time”, and our 6 year old shouted, “YAY” and ran to pack her bags!!!
Change…whether it's good or bad change evokes a response. Our human response tends to be just like one of my daughters’ reactions. Or perhaps you are like me, and sometimes react impulsively, but THEN think about things later. If that’s the case, then it’s more like “YAY, let’s go”, and then ten steps into the journey it’s “Uh oh, what have I done?”
Whichever way you react, change is usually hard. I hear in my office almost every day resistance to change... “I’m used to it”; “I’ve been like this all my life”; or “I am afraid of what it will be like”.
I think the Lord knew that most of us would have difficulty with change. Perhaps that’s why He created the world in seven days and then has things grow and change in the process, so we are able to adapt more easily to change? Most change is imperceptible, like our kids growing in height or a flower from a seed to a bloom. Most of the time it is slow and steady, but other times it comes in spurts.
It is the out of the blue, out of control, life-changing experiences we tend to resist or try to protect from.
Yet, don’t we all want change? We barely can wait in line anymore, or for a green light to change without getting antsy. Often we cry out “How come Lord you haven’t answered this prayer?”
Perhaps the real problem is that we only want change on our terms? Perhaps it’s less about not liking change, and more about not liking being out of control? We like the driver’s seat!
Whatever way you look at it, change is inevitable. And it is usually for good. Even if we don’t see it that way, God promises to use it for good, if we will cooperate with Him. Change is part of His plan.
So we have a choice to make. We can either...Join in with God and what He is doing or wants to do in our lives, OR we can dig in our heels and resist and do it our way.
It all boils down to whom we trust…Do we trust ourselves or another human being? Do we trust our circumstances or our money? What do we put our trust in?
OR are we trusting that our loving, sovereign God is in control and in charge of our lives like a good Daddy? If so, we can rest in the changes and cooperate with God. Then we will be able to declare like the lyrics from the popular Broadway play “Wicked”………..
“Who can say if I've been changed for the better?
I do believe I have been changed for the better
But,
Because I knew you...
Because I knew you...
Because I knew you...
I have been changed...
For good”
Isn’t that the truth! Change IS for good!
